Würzburg University Press reserves the right to select its publications.

We urge our authors and editors to comply with the guidelines for ensuring good academic practice issued by the University of Würzburg.

We also encourage you to make your research process as transparent as possible. This not only means storing research data on a long-term basis, but also publishing it in addition to your publication. The Research Data Management team will be happy to assist you. IT Center and University Library offer a research data repository, WueData, for publishing research data.

To turn your manuscript into a book, we require the following:

  • A manuscript ready for printing in terms of both language and content – You find further information on how to prepare your manuscript in "Recommendations for manuscript creation" (pdf, 101 KB),
  • A blurb, e.g. a short summary
  • A foreword, e.g. from your reviewer(s) or peers
  • Your preferred  binding (soft cover/ hard cover), paper, format and cover requirements. Our standard book formats are 17 x 24 and 15.5 x 22 cm, and we usually use 90g white or 90g cream white paper. If you would prefer a different format or paper, just let us know!

You can format the text yourself and we will look after the formal and technical editing. If you would like an additional edit on top of what we offer, we will be happy to put you in touch with the right person for the job.

We will be happy to provide you with format templates for Word and InDesign or a LaTeX class as soon as your manuscript is ready for typesetting.

Tip:
When formatting, please think about:

  • Uniform headings and captions
  • Headers, if applicable
  • Uniform spacing for paragraphs, headings and graphics/ images

When creating the print file, please think about:

  • Output as PDF/X-3 or ‘high-quality print’
  • Make sure all fonts and colour profile information are embedded.
  • Figures, tables and graphics should be of the best possible quality (at least 300 dpi), should not be compressed and your images should not contain transparencies.

We will of course check your files before printing. Formal and technical editing includes checking the formatting and the quality of your graphics (figures and tables). We will not print your work until all corrections have been incorporated and you have given us your approval.

Please check in advance whether you have the necessary rights to figures and texts that you would like to include in your book. We will be happy to assist you with any questions you may have in this regard.

Würzburg University Press is an Open Access publisher. We therefore publish under the Creative Commons CC BY-SA 4.0 International license, which allows anyone to adapt (e.g. translate) and share the work (e.g. on a specialised website). For this to be possible, the author must be named and adaptations must be passed on under the same license. In this way, we aim to help remove barriers to the dissemination of knowledge.

This license is part of the author contract, which we will conclude with you. The contract also stipulates the expected total cost of publication, the number of copies, how long the publication will be available from retailers and the price of the printed edition to be sold in book stores.

Würzburg University Press selects publications based on their academic quality and not on their potential economic return. As an Open Access publisher, we also offer worldwide electronic publication free of charge. We therefore require authors to cover the costs. We will be happy to provide you with a non-binding cost estimate. Costs may vary depending on the project and the services required. A monograph, softcover binding, 17x24 cm, 248 pages (12 colour pages) and 20 author copies (including mandatory copies) without typesetting, will cost around 550 Euro.

Tip for financing:

For information on the distribution of revenues through the VG Wort collecting society, please contact the VG Wort directly.

Your printed book will receive an ISBN and publication series will also receive an ISSN so that they can be ordered from book stores. Books will be available for at least 5 years. We work with a print-on-demand service provider that prints books as needed. This saves you the costs of a fixed initial print run. Your publication will be available in over 1,000 online book shops and listed in the Directory of Available Books (Verzeichnis Lieferbarer Bücher, VLB). It can then be ordered from national and international book retailers.
We will also arrange a mandatory copy of your publication for the German National Library (pursuant to section 14 DNBG, the law on the German National Library) and for the Bavarian State Library (pursuant to PflStG, the law on mandatory copies). This means that your work will be indexed in various library catalogues.

Tip: As an author, you can order additional copies directly from us at a reduced price at any time.

The electronic version of your book will be released on our OPUS Würzburg publication server. It will also be available worldwide via search engines such as Google Scholar and BASE. A mandatory copy of your publication will be provided to the German National Library for long-term archiving and your publication will be listed in additional library catalogues. Licensing your publication under CC BY-SA means that the electronic version can also be transferred to other publication servers. Your publication will be permanently accessible and citable via a link using its URN or DOI.

To ensure you can be clearly identified as the author, we recommend you register for an ORCID iD. ORCID is a personal and permanent identification number provided by a publisher-independent non-profit organisation. For information on applying for an ORCID and where you can use it, see our ORCID page.

Want to make your publication visible within your scientific community? No problem! As an author, you know your community and the relevant communication channels best. Please do not hesitate to get in touch should you need any help.

Würzburg University Press reserves the right to select its publications. All publications are reviewed for their scientific quality. Therefore we work together with professors at the University of Würzburg. Editors take responsibility for the review of anthologies and conference proceedings, as well as publication series. Disserations or Ph. D. theses are accepted only if marked magna or summa cum laude and with permission of the reviewers.

In addition please pay attention to the information on "good academic practice / publication ethics".

You can view download statistics for your publication on OPUS Würzburg directly. Click on the statistics/diagram icon to see the number of downloads. A distinction is made between how often the publication was downloaded and how often it was accessed (referred to as the landing page). This service has been available since 1 January 2014. The statistics are based on an analysis of the OPUS Würzburg weblogs. These are compiled according to the criteria of the OA statistics service. The statistics are compatible with the COUNTER standard.
